So it’s Week 5 of my Fast Trac entrepreneurial course, and I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about how to write blogs for money. This week’s topic, “Researching and Analyzing the Market” is perfect as I’ve been thinking about my target market a lot lately.

I had already decided to complete the dating and relationship eBook that I started earlier this year. But before I publish my eBook, I want to have more listening conversations with my target market, to make sure that what I’m offering is something that they want. So inspired by Hillary Rodham Clinton’s last Presidential campaign, I’m going on a LISTENING TOUR! In other words, I’m going to have conversations with women in my target market, to get a better understanding of their needs.

Starting a Blog for Money

When you are starting a blog for money, conversations with your target market are necessary. Not just to hear what they need, but to also note the words and phrases that they use. When you start to hear some of the same words or phrases over and over, then it’s a good chance that these are KEYWORDS and KEYWORD PHRASES that you can enter into a keyword tool like Jaaxy to find out how many people are searching on that same keyword each month.

Here’s a screenshot from the Jaaxy keyword tool that I use to research my article topics. This tool shows how many people searched for a particular keyword phrase in a month, and how much online competition there is for it.

This is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) 101. If you want your blog to make money, your posts need to be found easily. That means researching the topics that your target market is ALREADY SEARCHING FOR, and GIVING IT TO THEM. This is how your blog posts become optimized for search engines.

Even without understanding what the numbers represent, Jaaxy’s color coding lets you know how easy (or not) it will be to rank for a particular keyword phrase. With this knowledge, I can write articles that answer the questions such as, “Is oxytocin addictive?” and “What are oxytocin’s hormone effects? And the LAST thing I’d do is write an article titled “The Oxytocin Hormone!” because I’d have an ice cube’s chance in hell of getting on the first page of a search engine.

Blogging for Money from Home

Because I’m blogging for money from home,my target audience’s needs come first. So when I was writing a dating article about Oxytocin, also known as “the love hormone”, I didn’t just start writing off the top of my head. I went to Jaaxy FIRST to find out what keyword questions people entered into Google. When I know the questions that women are actually asking, I can make sure that my blog post addresses them.

Blogging creates “passive income”, but blogging is NOT passive work. Most professional bloggers use search engine optimization tools like Jaaxy (instead of using their intuition) in order to make the best keyword choices. This is because a keyword phrase that seems obvious to you might not be the most popular one that people search for. And if a keyword phrase has too much competition, you’ll have to find other keywords that your blog post CAN rank for.
